How to Photograph Skincare Products

Cleaning and prepping products

Before a single light is turned on, prepare your products:

  • Wipe all surfaces with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints, dust, and smudges
  • Ensure labels are perfectly centred and smooth — any bubbles or misalignment will be obvious
  • If photographing pump bottles, pump once and wipe to show the pump is primed without leaving product residue
  • Remove any shipping stickers or batch codes from the bottom

For open-jar shots, use a clean spatula to create a smooth product surface — or use the actual product surface if it's naturally smooth.

Lighting for skincare

Skincare photography benefits from a clean, clinical light that communicates purity:

StyleLight setupBest for
Clean/clinicalLarge softbox directly above; fill from frontWhite label, pharmacy brands
Luxury/editorialSingle side light at 45°; black card oppositePremium serums, oils
Natural/organicWindow light; white reflector fillNatural and indie brands

Avoid warm lights — they make white packaging look yellow and can make clear formulas appear tinted.

The most effective skincare backgrounds:

  • White or light marble — the default for premium skincare; clean and editorial
  • White linen or cotton fabric — adds texture without distraction
  • Botanical elements — fresh leaves, flower petals, or herbs signal natural ingredients
  • Crushed ice — works for cooling or hydrating products
  • Coloured paper — use brand colours for social media consistency

Keep props minimal. One or two supporting elements maximum — too many props compete with the product.

Composition ideas

  1. 1.Hero stack — arrange products by height, tallest at back, angled slightly inward
  2. 2.Flatlay trio — three products arranged in a triangle on marble, shot from directly above
  3. 3.Texture pour — show product texture next to the bottle: a drop of serum, a smear of cream
  4. 4.In-use context — a product placed on a bathroom shelf with a towel and glass of water

Editing skincare photos

  1. 1.Set white balance to neutral — check that white packaging reads as true white
  2. 2.Increase contrast slightly to give bottles crisp edges
  3. 3.Use the Heal / Clone Stamp tool to remove any final dust spots
  4. 4.Check label text is sharp and legible at web viewing sizes
  5. 5.Export at 2000 × 2000px for consistent Shopify/Amazon display

For lifestyle and scene variations, Sellable generates marble counter, bathroom shelf, and botanical outdoor scenes around your product images automatically.
